Volunteering – Do you have time to give?

The Wood Shop is all about people. One of the key aims of the project is to provide opportunities for members of the community to help in the day to day running of the organisation, receive training & share their skills.
We are dependent on a voluntary workforce, have a variety of roles on offer and hours to suit most people.
Our days are Tuesday to Thursday 9.30 – 4.30 and Friday and Saturday 9.00 – 4.00 and times can be varied to suit the individual, whether a couple of hours or a few days a week. Any help you could give will be greatly appreciated.

    1. Volunteer Opportunities

The Wood Shop, just like its parent project, Dorset Reclaim, is dependent on its voluntary workforce to keep the wheels turning. We have a variety of roles to offer that may suit you, whether you are looking to fill a few hours or have more time to give.
As the Wood Shop sits alongside Dorset Reclaims furniture reuse work in each depot, there is an opportunity to concentrate solely on wood work or become involved more broadly.
      Roles available include:

      • All aspects of wood working
      • Designing new products
      • Making templates
      • Product finishing – painting, stencilling, treating, labelling etc
      • Collecting donated wood

      Wider roles include

      • Assisting and advising our clients.
      • Helping to organize the warehouse, receiving deliveries and sorting orders.
      • Van driving.
      • Assisting the van drivers.
      • Repairing furniture.
      • Helping test and repair our electrical goods.
      • Cleaning donated goods.
      • Office & administration, taking phone calls, etc.
      • I.T., helping with donated computers, etc.
      • Specialist advice or skills to offer, especially carpentry and the ability to teach others.

We will cover your travel expenses and provide any personal protective equipment needed for any role you choose. If you are with us while job hunting, we are happy to provide references as appropriate.

      Volunteering whilst on Benefits

If you are currently in receipt of benefits & want to volunteer, you may need to speak to your Jobcentre Advisor to ensure they are happy & your benefit is not affected. Please bare in mind that the amount of volunteering you contribute may affect some benefits, whilst some others remain unaffected.
If you think you may be able to help us, or would like to arrange to look around a depot near you to get a better idea of how we work, please contact us.
To know more about volunteering whilst on Benefits, here is the leaflet from the Department for Work & Pensions:
